Ramadan (Urdu: Ramzan; Turkish: Ramazan) is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar; Muslims worldwide observe this month of fasting. During the entire month of Ramadan, Muslims are obligated to fast, every day from dawn to sunset. Fasting requires abstinence from food, drink, and sexual activity.
During Ramadan, Muslims devote more time to prayers and recitations from the holy book, the Quran. Muslims are also expected to put more effort into following the teachings of Islam by refraining from violence, anger, envy, greed, lust, angry/sarcastic retorts, gossip, and are meant to try to get along with each other better than normal. The purity of both thoughts and actions is important. Fasting is an act of deeply personal worship in which Muslims seek a raised level of closeness to Allah.
